So I had called Amy on the 9th and let her know we weren’t going to be doing it anymore – we obviously did not expect to get paid, and I thanked her for the adventure, but hells… no…

It turns out I must be an amazing paperboy…  Or they are desperate for carriers…  I like to believe the one that makes me look awesome.  Though, I don’t know if being an amazing paperboy at 35 is really something one should strive for.  She called me and asked why I wasn’t going to do this.  I let her know that split two ways the money just wouldn’t be worth it, and it was too long (75 Mile route) for me to do alone – I do have a full time job too…

She said she had a shorter route right in my neighborhood.  I thanked her for the opportunity, but let her know without Ryan, I couldn’t ever take a day off, and I do have to go out of town for work from time to time.  She let us know that if we took the route it was ours to find back-up for…  I don’t know anyone else that wants to do this!  Ryan was going to be my back-up!   So I again thanked her and let her know I wasn’t interested.  She called me back…  In times where people are trying so hard to find work, I’m surprised it was that important to get me on this route!

Turns out the girl that currently does my route has another route to do as well – she’s been doing 2 for months but wants to just do one now.  However, she said that any time I needed back-up – if I was going out of town or going on vacation, she would be able to cover my route.  Ok…  Damn…  I’m running out of excuses and I feel like I shouldn’t say “I just don’t want to.”  Because I DID!

So…  I told her I’d think about it and called her back the next day and said I would give it a try.  I let her know that if I called to have the lady doing my shift cover me and she couldn’t and I was told “too bad” I would be saying “Thanks – this didn’t work out.”  She said that was fine!  She was happy and told me to be there by 2:00 the next morning.  I said, “I thought it was like 2:30 for the long route – 3:00 should be ok, right?”  Apparently once you say yes, the polite creature that wanted me to take a route, turns quickly into the mean 2:00 paper-witch.  She snapped at me, “Well, she has 2 routes and has to take extra time to show you yours and then has to get to hers, so….”  I mean, the context of what she said made sense, but I guess…  I guess I’m just not used to being snapped at.  I told her I would be there that night – she said, “Maybe you should start after Thanksgiving.  I hadn’t thought about the Black Friday ads that would be coming out, so I agreed.  I’m going to try and be a paperboy again.  So again, here we go… Into the abyss…
