you can take it with you

i’m not stupid, you know.

i know i can’t take everything to the new house o look!

you bought me that candy dish for mother’s day

when you were in second grade

and that little chip was in the move from el paso

and you cried until i glued it, well, most of it

back in place good as new.

i’m taking that.

no! don’t put that in the giveaway box!

maria gave me that little angel for my 75th birthday the year

before she died you know

you never think of a child dying first

i never thought of your father dying first

i never thought of having to move all my things and

such a little place, i mean, a nice place but so little.

yes, yes, i know i can’t take everything  but

i’m taking that.

what are you doing!

with my clock? i collect clocks you know

i started years ago now that one i bought at the church rummage sale

in fairbanks in 1981 when your dad was still with the FAA and

it doesn’t work yet because he’s got to replace

that little turny thing in back when he buys the right tool

but he says it can work just fine so

i’m taking that.

what? that clay duck’s head? it’ll be like new

when i hotglue it back on i just need

to find the rest of the body it’s here

somewhere just put it in with the angel and wrap it in that quilt.

that’s the one grandma started o lord

back in 69 i think when she visited us

in seattle  and my sewing machine broke so she left it

for me to finish.

¡hey! don’t you roll your eyes at me!

listen hija you are not! the boss of me!

i’m not! stupid i know

i can’t take everything hey. what’s that?

o look!  i hung that clown picture  by your little brother’s crib

back in georgia, my sister sent it all the way from panama

and can you believe he’s retired from the army this year hey look all

it needs is a new glass in the frame good

as new.

i’m taking that.
